Leucanella viridescens

 

 

Distribution:

South America, reported from Brasil, Bolivia, Argentina and Uruguay in several subspecies. Depicted here is subspecies viridior from Argentina.

Wingspan:

approximately 7 to 9 cm

Season:

more or less continuously in captivity when kept warm

Food plants:

Salix caprea, Salix cinerea. 

Rearing:

Fairly easy on Salix. Keep in well ventilated plastic containers and move to a netted cage when the caterpillars become older. Watch out for condensation  and do not give wet leaves.  Fast growing.  It takes around five weeks before they start pupating . A living room temperature is enough. The pupal stage is only a couple of weeks. Try not to overwinter, just let the adults emerge.
