Automeris hesselorum

 

 

Distribution:

southern Arizona and northwest Mexico (formerly considered to be a subspecies of A. iris)

Wingspan:

in between 6 and 8 cm. 

Season:

one flight, fairly late in summer (end of July/August)

Food plants:

Robinia, Quercus

Rearing:

Very easy, suitable for children. Keep in well ventilated plastic containers, netted cages or sleeved outdoors. Watch out for condensation when kept in plastic containers and do not give wet leaves. Fast growing and ready to pupate in approximately  six weeks. The pupae overwinter in a cool (frost free) room.
