Brahmaea hearseyi

Distribution:

from the North East Himalayas and Western China, south into Indonesia and Malaysia

Wingspan:

Largest member of the genus, with a wingspan up to 18 centimeter or even slightly more.

Season:

multiple flights in captivity as long as the temperature remains high enough

Food plants:

Most Ligustrum species.   Fraxinus is an accepted alternative.

Rearing:

Very easy and fast growing at room temperature. Caterpillars pupate within (less then) a month after hatching. Keep the first three instars in well ventilated plastic containers but move to a netted cage after they've molted to the fourth instar. Pupae stored at room temperature will hatch within 5 to 7 weeks, depending on the humidity. Be advised that this is a very large species, with extremely fast growing and voracious caterpillars which require large amounts of food and more cage cleaning then the average caterpillar.

Difficulties:

None
