The approximately 60 species of the Theretra genus are widespread throughout Europe, Asia and Africa. The genus is closely related to Hippotion and Cechetra and there is still some debate whether all species currently described truly belong in this genus or should be placed elsewhere.

This debate of course has no impact on how to rear the Theretra. In general they are fast growing and fairly easy. Many (not all) species have a preference for Vitaceae, Onagraceae and/or Araceae. They can easily be reared in well ventilated plastic containers.
