Smerinthus

This is by far the most boring genus in the hawk moth family. Almost all the thirteen species look very similar. They are medium sized moths, occurring almost everywhere in the Holarctic region. Many of them are still common. The caterpillars are green. Yes, all of them ... Is this a genus you should skip? Not necessarily. They are extremely easy to rear, which makes them perfect as beginners species. Most (not all) feed on Salix and/or Populus species.
