Gynanisa

This is a rather messy genus, with a lot of confusion and misidentified species. There are probably around 19 valid species occurring in sub-Saharan Africa, however this number can still go down or up once more is known . The moths are fairly large and attractive.

In general, the rearing is not extremely difficult, but some experience is required. The most likely species to obtain is maja, which is regularly sold as pupae (imported from farms in Kenya). The other species are almost never available (you will have to go and catch them yourself).
