Distribution:

Widely distributed throughout east Africa, from Kenya to South Africa and west to Congo (RDC)

Wingspan:

10 to 12 cm, reared in captivity often smaller

Season:

one to two flights annually, but not continuously. Pupal stage can take months

Food plants:

Salix caprea and cinerea, Quercus (especially white oaks), Rhus, Searsia. Be advised that Prunus laurocerasus is risky. Many if not most of the times the freshly hatched caterpillars will reject this plant. Make sure you have something else available, in case of.

Rearing:

Suitable for newcomers, though a minimum of experience is required. Keep in spacious, well ventilated plastic containers and move to a netted cage in the final instar. Watch out for condensation and do not give wet leaves. Make sure the food is clean and fresh.  Tolerant of a wide range of temperatures as long as it does not become to cool (minimum living room temperature). The caterpillars are fast growing and ready to pupate within 5 to 6 weeks. The pupal stage can take several months.
