Distribution:

the exact distribution is a little uncertain due to the confusion with the very similar Gonimbrasia rhodophila. However true alopia is probably a West-African species occurring from Sierra Leone into Nigeria. The animals depicted here are from Amedzofe in Ghana.

around 10 cm

Season:

in captivity at least two flights annually, but not continuously. Pupal stage can take months

Food plants:

Carpinus, Corylus, Liquidambar

Rearing:

Suitable for newcomers, though a minimum of experience is required. Keep in spacious, well ventilated plastic containers. Watch out for condensation and do not give wet leaves. Make sure the food is clean and fresh.  Tolerant of a wide range of temperatures as long as it does not become too cool (minimum living room temperature). The caterpillars are ready to pupate within 6 to 7 weeks. The pupal stage can take several months, especially during the cooler part of the year.
