Distribution:

occurs in the northern half of South America with records from all countries south of Panama going all the way south into Bolivia and Brasil.  The animals depicted here originate from French Guiana.

one of the largest species in the genus, with a wingspan up to 14 centimeter

polyphage on Rosaceae (Rosa, Rubus, Prunus, Crataegus, Malus, ...), Fagaceae (Quercus, Fagus, ...), Betulaceae (Corylus, Carpinus, Alnus, ...) and many more

Rearing:

Easy, suitable for newcomers. Keep in spacious, well ventilated plastic containers or in netted cages when older. Watch out for condensation and do not give wet leaves. ,A living room temperature is enough , though they grow faster when warmer.. Fully grown in seven to eight weeks (very much depending on temperature and food plant quality). Do not overcrowd in the final instar, keep very clean and make sure the food remains fresh. When kept warm the pupal stage is short (approximately four weeks). Do not try to overwinter as pupae, just let them emerge.
