Antheraea montezuma

Distribution:

Mexico

Wingspan:

around 15 cm

Season:

one flight, fairly late in summer (end of July/August/September), in captivity more irregular with adults emerging even with fairly low temperatures (but with a higher air  humidity)

Food plants:

Quercus, preferably species  out of the white oaks and cerris groups. Red oaks are not recommended

Rearing:

A more difficult species, requiring warm and dry conditions. Rearing them in a spot with some sun is beneficial. Keep in well ventilated plastic containers, but move to netted cages when older. Watch out for condensation when kept in plastic containers and do not give wet leaves. Fast growing and ready to pupate in approximately  five to six weeks. The pupae overwinter in a cool (frost free) room. Regularly check in late autumn and early spring (as early as March), as some unwanted eclosures are always possible.

Difficulties:

fresh eggs are usually available fairly late in the season, having an evergreen oak as back up is recommended
