Adeloneivaia jason

Distribution:

Central America, from Mexico to Panama. Further south replaced by similar looking species.

Wingspan:

Males in between 6 and 9 cm, females in between 8 and 12 cm

Season:

more or less continuously, with at least 3 peak flights annually. In captivity when kept warm continuously, however pupae can also remain dormant for a couple of months, which makes the emerging of the moths somewhat irregular

Food plants:

Fabaceae preferred (Gleditsia, Robinia, ...). Can be persuaded to accept Quercus robur in captivity, however many will not start to feed

Rearing:

Once starting to feed not difficult. Keep warm and clean. The first 3 instars in well ventilated plastic containers. Older caterpillars in a netted cage. Fast growing and ready to pupate within 4 to 5 weeks. Adeloneivaia do not make a cocoon. When ready to pupate treat like Sphingidae and other underground pupating species. The pupal stage is variable from a couple of weeks to several months.

Difficulties:

Getting them to eat
